Streaming without Spotify

I’ll spare you the diatribe, but I hate Spotify. I also hate Apple music, Pandora, and every other proprietary platform. In my defense, they started it by hating me. I WELCOME THEIR HATRED. That said, I understand if streaming is how you like to listen to music! Thanks to Funkwhale, we have an option that is totally free of cost and free from advertising, that respects your privacy and is decentralized.

Like using XMPP/Jabber for the livestream chat, I chose this way to be useful for you beyond just my stuff. You can join any public Funkwhale server or set up your own and follow my library there if you want. If enough people are interested, I can set up mine to allow uploads, let me know!

LET’S DO THIS:

First, sign up on The Pigsty, my Funkwhale server.

Open the menu and go to settings.

Scroll down in your account settings to Subsonic API password and generate a password.

So now you have your Pigsty user name, your Pigsty password, and your Subsonic password. That’s all you need!

Download an app for Funkwhale, there are plenty to choose from for Android or iOS, both free and paid. I use Audinaut for Android from the F-Droid store (Here’s the Google Play store link). On iOS, substreamer has worked best for me – it’s a little buggy, but free. They all work about the same, whether they want you to set it up right away or if you go to the settings menu to set up a new server, you’ll enter:

  1. The server, https://pigsty.silksow.com
  2. Your Pigsty user name
  3. Your Subsonic password (NOT your Pigsty password)

Now, depending on the app, you’re loaded up with Kyle’s tunes and ready to listen anywhere! If you need to choose a library, all my stuff is in the library called “Kyle Bronsdon”. I thought that was pretty intuitive.

Easy, right? Let me know if you have any trouble.
